When Devo first emerged from Akron, OH, into the nascent ‘70s new-wave and post-punk movement, the band’s skittish, angular songwriting and addictive arrangements delivered via a “devolutionist” philosophy - based on the idea that the world is in a downward spiral fueled by decadence, moral decline, mechanization, and overconsumption - was generally viewed as quirky and perhaps a little ‘out there,’ in an interesting way.

But in 2026, just as the film Idiocracy now seems like an episode of the evening news, Devo’s entire ethos is akin to the obvious. Devolution today is less a philosophy, more a simple observation.

What a time for the band to come to Buffalo, then. It’s been 16 years since they last rolled through town. Devolution hasn’t exactly been dormant during that time.

When this beautifully curated show was first announced back in February, the responding buzz was palpable. People seemed genuinely psyched, and tickets sold briskly, a testament both to promoters Fun Time Presents and their hand-picked lineup (including Soul Coughing and Shilpa Ray), and to the AKG Art Museum itself, it’s Elmwood Avenue-facing facade offering a sublime setting for a season-starting concert.

That this wasn’t a pre-fab package tour aimed squarely at a single demographic added to the general air of awesomeness that pervaded from Shilpa Ray and band’s first tune, through Soul Coughing’s all but show-stealing set, and right up until Devo’s sublime performance was cut a bit short by the appearance of a frankly ominous lightning storm. This was a gig befitting its setting, on the grounds of a world-renowned art museum.

At first, it wasn’t entirely clear that Ray’s sometimes trippy, sometimes aggressive and squalling art-punk was connecting with what was ostensibly a Devo crowd, with plenty of flower-pot hats and jumpsuits visible among the assembled. That vibe didn’t last, though - by their second tune, Ray and her band had turned any doubters into believers, reconnecting those old enough to remember to a late-70s, ‘Patti Smith Band at CBGBs’ type of atmosphere (something I know about only through reading the reports of others), poetry and noise, wry observation and passionate keening in equal evidence. It all made perfect sense, ultimately.

Despite their being ample enticing shows happening in Buffalo on the same night as this one, Rockin’ at the AKG felt like a family reunion for a large swath of the region’s musician and music-loving community. And it would be remiss not to note that, based on conversations I had during the day, many of them were there primarily for Soul Coughing. (Initially, I numbered myself among them, but my view was expanded by Devo’s incredible set - more on that in a minute.)

This show was a bit of a one-off for Soul Coughing, which disbanded in a haze of hurt feelings and festering recriminations more than 25 years ago, and didn’t fully reform until 2024. That made the Buffalo show particularly enticing for fans of a band that didn’t really sound like anyone else when they emerged in the 90s, and still doesn’t today. Man, did we get our money’s worth.

Vocalist/guitarist/poet Mike Doughty, keyboardist/sampling mastermind Mark Degli Antoni, drummer Yuval Gabay and bassist Sebastian Steinberg crafted a blend of spoken word, funk, jazz, hip-hop, minimalistic grooves, and unexpected hooks that sounded futuristic in the mid-90s, and remains forward-looking today.

Pulling tracks from their three studio albums, Ruby Vroom, Irresistible Bliss and El Oso, Soul Coughing took the stage like they owned the place, and simply crushed it, from first groove to last note. Doughty seemed relaxed and focused, his infectious baritone in fine form, his mantra-like, percussive phrasing on glorious display, from the moment he intoned “Get onto the bus,” and summoned the funky freakishness of “Bus to Beelzebub.”

The sound was loud as hell and crystal clear, which was particularly significant for those of us who consider bassist Steinberg a lord of the realm. Steinberg’s fat, round upright bass tone is a key ingredient in Soul Coughing’s gumbo, and the way he and drummer Gabay locked in throughout the set was magical to behold. I had a ‘mind left body’ moment during “Blue Eyed Devil,” it’s trance-inducing groove and strange variation on funk consuming me. Looking around, it was obvious I was far from the only fan who’d achieved lift-off.

The brilliantly employed samples employed by Degli Antoni reminded me of J Dilla’s Doughnuts, so seamlessly were their woven into the sonic fabric.

The band played what serious fans would’ve wanted - “Soft Serve,” “The Idiot Kings,” “True Dreams of Wichita,” “Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago,” and, of course, “Super Bon Bon” all made a strong showing. What a special show from a truly special band.

I have no idea what Devo sounded like in concert back in October of 1981, when they played Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, but I can attest that Devo in 2026 is a face-smacking band that shows no signs of being an oldies act. They sounded amazing at the AKG - full, loud, incredibly tight, and totally on point.

Three founding members — Mark Mothersbaugh, Bob Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale — were joined by drummer Jeff Friedl and guitarist/keyboardist Josh Hager, taking on duties once filled by the late Bob Casale, for a set that was headed for outer space (with an accompanying Carl Sagan video, for good measure, before lightning forced the pulling of the plug.

I doubt anyone felt short-changed, though. An hour with an absolutely on-fire Devo is an hour we’re unlikely to ever forget. I mean, we haven’t devolved that far, right? Some of guys still have good taste…

Hey there, fellow music-lovers.

Jut a quick note to welcome a new member of the Miers on Music Substack team.

If you caught last week’s column, you know that Kim and I made the decision to abandon artwork that employs AI for substack, in the hopes that a local artist might step up and suggest some sort of working agreement that would make sense with a column that is distributed to free, largely as a public service.

Happily, a dear friend rose to the occasion. Starting last week, Where the Bands Are is blessed to feature the handiwork of Ben Dunkle, a Buffalo artist and educator, music lover, and, most significantly, a great dude - funny as hell, intelligent, deeply talented, and kind.

We have many memories of backyard hangs with Ben, enjoying a few drinks while he offhandedly conjured pieces of art with pen and sketch pad all while curating a cool setlist. Ben always acts like this is no big deal. But of course, we’ve kept these “sketches,” because they’re so damn good.

We’re so grateful that Ben will be contributing some hand-drawn feature art for this column. Help us in welcoming him!

Recording today’s episode was a real treat for me. Having Alex Khoury, Cody Tarbox, Seth Bykowski and Colin Gray - who are known collectively as Witty Tarbox - in the studio with me, with instruments in hand and plenty of stories to tell, felt like one of those cool spontaneous backyard hangs around the fire-pit. A moment you didn’t see coming, but that arrived with an air of familiarity. Like, we’ve all been here before, even though we just met.


As you’ll hear, these four musicians are a band of brothers, a group of guys who found their musical tribe when they met each other, and allowed a unique, rootsy, rustic, and rockin’ sound to develop organically. They come from different backgrounds, and possess widely varied skill sets, but when they lock in together, something magical that is well beyond the sum of its parts emerges.

The band recently travelled to the fabled Dreamland Recording Studios, just outside Woodstock, NY, to track what became their new album, Midnight Sun. We talked about that experience, and the guys performed some of the material that emerged from those sessions live here at 678 Main Studios. What emerged is one of my favorite episodes of the podcast to date.

Hey there, fellow music-lovers.

Strange days indeed. Hope you’re keeping well and keeping on.

Last week, a wee bit of tumult erupted around this very column - or, more specifically, around the piece of artwork that accompanied this column.

For the past 3 years, we (me and Kim) here at the corporate headquarters of Dharma Din Creatives LLC - also known as our dining room - have been using art created through a combination of AI and Adobe Photoshop to offer an overview of the general thematic content of the accompanying column. We did this because we wanted the column to stand out, and to have art that changed weekly. We also didn’t want to use generic art, or use the work of photographers without paying them or getting their permission, with the exception of images that have clearly been circulated as publicity materials.

Well aware that we have zero budget to pay an artist to create something new and specific each week for a column that we create and distribute for free, we felt that the AI/Photoshop approach offered a reasonable solution. Kim is a professional designer and artist who would love nothing more than to be able to paint or draw or illustrate a new piece of artwork each week. Time doesn’t allow this. Creating, curating and distributing this free column each week takes between 6 and 8 hours of our time already.

Last week, via social media and on the site of The Buffalo Hive, which we gratefully and happily allow to distribute this column for no fee, comments critical of the use of AI art in the column became plentiful enough to be noticeable.

I’m not interested in recreating all of this here. I just wanted to offer a little bit of context. There are plenty of reasons to fear, distrust and boycott the use of AI. I’m on board with all of them. Aside from the single piece of artwork accompanying the Where the Bands Are column each week, and the use of Logic’s AI-based EQ analyzer to help me in focusing on problem areas in my mixes when recording and mastering music projects, I steer clear of it. But believe me, I do not suffer from the delusion that avoiding AI is going to make it go away.

As has always been the case, it’s generally not the technology that’s the problem, in itself. Rather, it’s the unchecked greed and short-sightedness of folks who seek personal gain from the exploitation of said technology. Like everything else, this is about money - who has little (or none) of it, and who has all the rest of it, and will move mountains and destroy ecosystems to get their hands on that tiny remaining portion which the rest of us our currently splitting. If you’re worried about the unregulated spread of AI, as we all should be, then doing what we can to put pressure on tech billionaires (and their powerful friends) who see AI as an opportunity for an unchecked cash grab should be our aim.

But yeah, in the meantime, we’ll stop using AI art in this free column, and work with local artists whenever we can.

Event curator Jeff Miers said, “I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Artpark as Music Curator of Analog Rewind. The 90’s were such a special time for the Buffalo original music scene. I was a part of that scene as a musician, but I was also a huge fan of so many of the bands. It wasn’t uncommon for us to attend each other’s gigs on the regular, which created a real feeling of community and togetherness. Musically, the bands covered a pretty broad array of genres, most of which fit beneath the umbrella of ‘alternative music’. That meant everything from punk, post-punk and garage rock, ska-inflicted sounds, funk and interesting hybrids of all of these. What a thrill to be getting some of these bands back together to celebrate that exciting era of Buffalo music! And what a great opportunity to see so many old friends again!”

Ansley Court

One of the finest power-pop ensembles to emerge from the Buffalo independent music scene, Ansley Court - vocalist Joe Foldes, guitarist Brian Woods, bassist Joe Mattimore and drummer Mike Boncaldo - married an indie rock aesthetic to their love for indelible pop hooks and garage grit. The band’s 1996 album Jade Heart Bleeder is a stone-cold classic of the era.

Girlpope

If you loved your garage rock with a healthy dose of Kinks-style power chords, unforgettable power-pop choruses, and a palpable sense of rock ’n’ roll abandonment, you were an easy mark for Girlpope. With albums like Cheeses of Nazareth and The Whole Scene Going, ‘The ‘Pope’ offered a fat-free body of work long on hooks, high on energy, and stuffed to the brim with heavenly melodies.

Marvelous Sauce

A band that seemed like a shoe-in for a broader breakthrough beyond Buffalo, Marvelous Sauce brought a vivacious power-pop edge to their obvious love for the taut early punk and Mod revivalism of The Clash and The Jam. Songs like “Sister Knows What To Do”, “Animals and Bicycles” and “Strength and Sobriety” made the band’s self-titled 1995 release a must-have, but on stage, these tunes truly came to life. Marvelous Sauce made music that was built to last.

The Ramrods

Blasting out of Kenmore, NY, in the late ‘80s, the Ramrods raucous and ribald blend of primal garage rock, Stooges-style swagger, and killer hooks defined the Buffalo indie-alternative rock movement of the time. Singer Bill Scott, guitarists Pat Neal and John Paa, bassist Norm Schwagler, and drummer Craig Voight were the coolest band in town for a brief but brightly-burning period. Rest assured - they’ve still got it!

The Tails

Another powerful Kenmore-born ensemble, The Tails became a mainstay of the 90s regional music scene with their heady blend of influences ranging from the Beatles, to New Wave luminaries, prog-rock iconoclasts, world music visionaries, grunge gods, and the icons of jazz, as best exemplified by their 1995 album Spiral World. Guitarist and founding member Kevin Boyle passed away in 2022, but remaining members Nelson Starr, Jeff Miers, Eric Starr and Dave Hill recently reunited for a show at Nietzsche’s in Buffalo, dedicating their set to their bandmate’s memory.

Hey there, fellow music-lovers.

Well, here it comes. We’ll be in it before you know it.

This weekend is Buffalo Porchfest, which has by now become an unofficial kickoff for the summer concert season. Information on a slew of outdoor summer concert series’ dropped this week, as well. An unexpected cancellation of what seemed like it was going to be a cool show at Artpark has been balanced in the ‘good news’ column by the announcement that a Buffalo promoter with a proven track record is taking over a storied Niagara Falls venue that, it seems, hasn’t really been managed correctly in the past. And an intimate show from a living legend has been added to the garden of earthly delights that is our ever-expanding roster of summer concerts.

Not a bad week, on balance.

The mainstream media has been arguing that electric guitar-based music is on its last legs for almost as long as the electric guitar has existed. Even as guitar rock exploded in the later 1960s, naysayers were sounding the death knell. This happened again in the 70s, when some folks insisted that disco (which, ironically, featured serious funk guitar riffage, prominently) meant the end of rock. And again in the 80s, as synths became ubiquitous. This has been happening consistently, ever since, perhaps due to the fact that music journalism has long been at least partially populated by lazy sods who don’t actually know very much about music. So it goes…

Meanwhile, musicians, and a healthy portion of the music-consuming public, continue to ignore the memo. And electric guitar-based music continues to thrive and evolve, holding appeal for multiple generations of people who aren’t music critics.

Case in point - the ongoing SatchVai Band tour, which stopped by Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo on Tuesday, May 12.

Multiple generations of guitarists came together for this 3-plus hour tour de force celebrating the enduring power and majesty of the electric guitar. And if Kleinhans was, rather surprisingly, not completely sold out on the night, those who were in attendance were granted a gift of superb musicianship, proof-positive that instrumental rock music was built to last, and that it continues to morph.

Joe Satriani and Steve Vai have known each other for decades, initially bonding as teens growing up on Long Island. The oft-told story has grown into the stuff of apocryphal legend, but it also happens to be true - Vai took guitar lessons from Satriani, who is four years his elder, when Vai was a 13 year-old budding genius. The two have been friends ever since, but despite one-offs and shared bills, the formation of the SatchVai Band marks their first official partnership, and the current Surfing With the Hydra Tour is a celebration of this union 50-odd years in the making.

This scenario already made the show a special one, but the addition of Animals As Leaders to the bill sealed the deal.

That band - a trio with a massive sound, comprising guitarists Tosin Abasi & Javier Reyes and drummer Matt Garstka - opened the evening’s proceedings with stunningly complex, polyrhythmic, dense instrumental music that was long on virtuosity, but also smartly composed and thematically unified. In essence, Abasi is to his generation what Vai and Satriani are to theirs - an artist on the leading edge, one able to advance the instrument in both a technical and harmonic manner.

Animals As Leaders are a dynamic and nuanced band, to be sure, but the trio certainly took to the Kleinhans stage with their phasers set to stun. An aggressively dynamic light show moved in perfect synchronicity with the band’s music, which to the uninitiated might have sounded a bit “all over the place,” but with repeated exposure, begins to make perfect sense. (I mean, if people can become acclimated to Angine de Poitrine with out much difficulty, then Animals As Leaders is similarly and certainly worth the same effort.)

The band was louder than hell, which suits the music. (But maybe too loud for the room. Kleinhans was designed for an orchestra, after all, and the room can pose a challenge for heavily amplified music. Far better to err on the side of reducing both stage volume and front-of-house decibel levels, particularly for a band employing as much nuance as Animals As Leaders. Some of that nuance was, sadly, compromised during the show. That said, Kleinhans’ illustrious history includes performances by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, all bands favoring blistering volume levels. So there’s that.)

The sound did improve as AAL’s set progressed, and in the end, their performance suffered little due to the audio onslaught. This is a special band, one able to bring progressive rock tropes to bear on bombastic metal, with an eye toward your Djent-al Health. Their inclusion in the show (and the tour) speak to this music’s multi-generational appeal and continued resonance.

The stars of the show then duly arrived, and from the downbeat, we were in for a wild ride, one that was comprised in part of lessons in guitar tone manipulation, exegeses on the indomitability of the perfect groove, jaw-dropping displays of pure virtuosity, studies in song craft sans vocals, as well as the oft-overlooked significance of the ability to leave space, and the awareness of just how sacred that space can be.

Part of what makes the Surfing With the Hydra Tour so cool is the fact that the band has new music to perform and feature, and so opener “Dancing” set the tone for the evening. A smoking groove over a cool chord progression and memorable ensemble motifs gave way to stellar soloing from both of the band’s namesakes. “I Wanna Play My Guitar,” another new song, followed, and featured bassist Marco Mendoza ably handling the lead vocal originally tracked by guest Glenn Hughes on the studio version. This was a riff-o-rama in the mold of early Montrose, a la “Bad Motor Scooter” or “Rock Candy.” The third installment in the trilogy of new tracks came in the form of the seriously impactful “The Sea of Emotion Pt. 1,” a deeply dramatic, Zeppelin-esque, Phrygian mode strut with plenty of opportunities for star turns from both Satch and Vai. This was breathtaking stuff.

Both Vai and Satriani then took turns fronting the band for a few tunes, before reconvening to offer musical commentary on each other’s compositions. Vai gave us torrid versions of “Zeus in Chains” and “Little Pretty,” while Satriani offered turbo-charged takes on “Surfing with the Alien” and “Sahara.”

The individual pieces were excellent, but the true magic was most evident when the two guitarists were sharing the stage, so clear was the joy they were taking in playing together and off of each other. It was truly beautiful to witness.

A shout-out is absolutely in order for the band, with drummer Kenny Aaronoff earning ‘man-of-the-match’ status for his muscular grooves and John Bonham-like ability to root the music in something more than solid.

Bassist Mendoza and guitarist Pete Thorn were also much more than sidemen throughout, adding to both the harmonic intricacy and the earth-shaking grooves. These guys truly brought the thunder.

Today’s guest is one of the most critically lauded and commercially successful rock guitarists of his generation.

Since the 1987 release of his second album, the evergreen Surfing with the Alien, Joe Satriani has been nominated for 15 Grammy Awards and sold more than 10 million albums.And he did all of this with a body of work that is almost exclusively instrumental. Taking a page from the book of the late Jeff Beck, Satriani blended a penchant for memorable melodies, intense and ambitious arrangements, and considerable virtuosity, in the process, becoming the best-selling instrumental rock guitarist of all time.

For his latest venture, Satriani has teamed with one of his oldest friends and collaborators - another legend, who also happens to be a former student of Satriani’s - the great Steve Vai, to form The SatchVai Band. (For our readers and listeners here in Buffalo, NY, you’ll have the opportunity to catch this powerhouse in action at Kleinhans Music Hall on Tuesday, May 12.)

During our chat, Joe - who also happens to be one of the nicest guys I’ve ever encountered in the music business - reflected on his earliest musical inspirations, the importance of jazz in the development of his musical imagination, why the SatchVai Band puts a perma-grin on his face, and his passion for the soon-to-be-released first studio album from that band.

Today’s guest is a long over-due one. I’ve known Todd Eberwine for a couple decades by this point, and during that time, I’ve been witness to some purely transcendent moments in concert clubs and bars and outdoor venues, courtesy of his guitar playing and skills as both band-leader and lightning rod for face-melting, dynamic jams.

The kind of moments where you forget where you are, forget what you were doing before the show, stop worrying about what you have to do tomorrow, and fully inhabit the moment, the here and now.

That’s a tall order for an instrumentalist to fill. But Todd is seeking those moments at every gig. He’s taken me there when I’m out front in the audience, just along for the ride as a fan. And he’s done it when I was playing alongside him on the stage, too.

Todd is a seeker, and because of that fact, he’s had an interesting life so far. His creative wanderlust has led him through tenures in some truly fantastic bands - Dive House Union was one of those bands, a true soul-rock powerhouse. Soul Roach was another.

His long strange trip has led him to a relatively new ensemble, one that trades beneath his last name, and features a cast of characters known and loved by veterans of the Buffalo and Western New York music scene.

During our chat, Todd talks about that band, Eberwine, and what it means to him. He looks back on what led him here, and looks ahead toward what’s next. And he shares some interesting thoughts on why music matters to him, and matters a helluva lot.

If our conversation sounds like a couple of longtime friends riffing on their love of music, their favorite bands, and just how awesome Jamiroquai is - well, that’s because that’s exactly what it is.

On Sunday May 3rd, SAMF is hosting a free sneak-peek into this fresh partnership at The Cave (71 Military Rd in Buffalo), beginning at 1 pm . Melissa - a Grammy winning violinist and member of the renowned Harlem Quartet - and Marshall will present a public version of their UB class, offering educated guidance on turning artistic pursuit into a sustainable career. This event is offered as a public service to the Buffalo music and arts community, music & arts students, and arts & music educators.

Hey there, fellow music-lovers.

Here’s a little gem that is worth a few moments of your time. Something to ruminate on. Something that encourages us to allow gratitude into the room for a little while. The great Ziggy Marley - who brings his Brightside Tour to Artpark on July 11 - joined host Joel Madden on the latest episode of Artist Friendly, which dropped today. The two had an inspiring, uplifting conversation, one that reminds us of music’s ability to elevate our lives. Here’ a little taste of it.

Both Elmwood and Transit stores will be open at 8 am on RSD and the Elmwood location will have live music with Grosh (acoustic) at 3 pm, and In the Round 2 “Run that Back”(Danielle A, Curtis Lovell, Myq Farrow) at 7 pm ($10 presale/$15 door).
Bar will be open.

Hi-Fi Hits

MUSIC ON MAIN (Williamsville)

Spearheaded by Eddie Tice, the Thursday evening free music series on Main Street (and adjacent) in the village of Williamsville is back. Some lineups are already being posted. Opening night is Thursday, June 4 and a few acts have been announced: Sorrentino’s - Lithium, RationAles - Nerds Gone Wild Trio, and The Eagle House Restaurant - Davey O.

Musicians get into the game for a variety of reasons, some of them noble, some of them less so. But at the core of a life in music is the desire to explore, to strive toward freedom of mind and body through music, and maybe even, on occasion, achieve some sort of state of transcendence. Generally speaking, attaining this heightened state can be difficult to achieve if a script, or even a strict setlist, is being followed.

Realizing this led me to the creation of Off-Script Sundays, a new monthly matinee series at Penny Lane (10255 Main Street, Clarence) kicking off this Sunday, April 129, at 4 pm.

The plan is to present performances that explore improvisation from a variety of vantage points, including but not limited to jazz-based approaches, exploratory rock, and even completely non-idiomatic forms of improvisation. Jams, in other words.

The core goal of the series is to provide a platform for emerging Buffalo-based artists and seasoned veterans alike to develop their work in real-time, with an audience sharing in the journey.

There’s a backstory here, and that backstory involves a Buffalo drummer, Damone Jackson, and a legendary area guitarist, George Puleo, who together launched a conceptual band hell-bent on discovering new music in the moment, one spontaneous composition at a time. That band, the Damone Jackson Outcome, has evolved over the past 8-plus years into an absolute powerhouse, one that has radically altered the musical landscape of Buffalo, created a new high-water mark for regional musicianship, and through its ongoing Tuesday residency at the Central Park Grill in Buffalo, birthed a community of loyal, open-minded listeners eager to take a ride into territories uncharted with the band.

Attending these DJO shows over the years has been a transformative experience for me - an experience that planted the seeds for Off-Script Sundays long before I mustered the fortitude to take the leap and go for it.

I’m hoping this series will be breeding ground for new conglomerations of musicians, and that some of these one-off pairings lead to the birth of new bands and new musical concepts.

I’m hoping to learn something new about myself and my musicianship in the process.

And I’m hoping that musicians and members of the music-loving community will find a welcoming vibe that makes them want to return to spend an afternoon with friends and music community members on the 3rd Sunday afternoon of each month.

The series will consist of a rotating group of artists that perform 30-45 minute sets. Diversity will be encouraged and celebrated. Genre lines will be willfully blurred.

For the Off-Script Sundays series debut on Sunday, April 19, two ensembles will perform, with the potential for some open-ended cross-over to cap things off.

First, OWMN - an improv-based group consisting of John Olivier (drums), Erin Ward (guitar), Jeff Miers (guitar) and Ryan Nogle (bass) - will make its public debut with a set of exploratory rock and progressive sounds. Oishi, a new progressive jazz quartet, will follow with an improvised set of their own.

Hello music lovers, and welcome to another edition of Why Music Matters. I’m your host, music journalist and musician Jeff Miers.

On today’s episode, I spend some time with Buffalo-born singer Cami Clune.

Many of you will remember Cami from season 19 of NBC’s The Voice, which originally aired in 2020. Cami grabbed headlines with her performance during the season, eventually going on to the semi-finals, and finishing in the Top 9.

Since then, Cami has been recording and performing throughout the Western New York region. She recently released her 7th single, and is in the process of preparing an EP of new music for release in the late spring.

Hockey fans have had ample opportunity to take in Cami’s talents this year - this NHL season, which marks the first time the Buffalo Sabres have clinched a playoff position in 15 years, is also Cami’s first as the team’s Official National Anthem Singer. Coincidence? Maybe. But fans have certainly noted that Cami’s pre-game performances have fired up the fans on the home ice and added to the excitement surrounding the team.

During our chat, Cami talks about her love for the Sabres, her life in music, and her hopes for the future.

It’s a testament to the depth of Cheap Trick’s catalog that the band can ostensibly be touring to promote a new album - 2025’s All Washed Up, an undeniable later-career masterpiece - play exactly nothing from that new album, and still turn in one of the strongest, most vibrant set-lists you’re likely to get from a band of their (or any, frankly) vintage. Only Cheap Trick could put out new music widely viewed as the equal of their very best and then proceed to completely ignore it.

Some fans might find this frustrating. But really, it’s completely on point for America’s greatest power-pop band. In essence, Cheap Trick has been on a non-stop tour since 1974. Since they’ve only released one stinker of an album during all of this time (1990’s Busted), the band can basically open its songbook, close its eyes, and point randomly at any album/era when it’s time to craft a setlist.

Last weekend’s show at the Seneca Niagara Casino Events Center was a notable one for several reasons.

First, as a Cheap Trick maniac of multiple decades - my first CT gig took place at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on the One On One tour in July of 1985, and I’ve lost count of the shows I’ve attended since - I treat ‘An Evening With Cheap Trick’ shows as manna from heaven. The band ends up as opening act on so many bills, some perfect, some decidedly less so, and these opening slots always feel waaaaaay too short. Forty-five minutes with Rockford’s Finest just doesn’t cut it.

Secondly, the current touring version of Cheap Trick is an absolute powerhouse, principally due to the fact that the principals have wisely fleshed out their core quartet with the addition of singer Robin Zander’s uber-talented son, Robin Taylor Zander. Cheap Trick still kicks ass, to be sure, but with principals Zander (73), Rick Nielsen (77) and Tom Petersson (75) dealing with the inevitable challenges of aging, Robin Taylor’s strength as guitarist and secondary vocalist ensures the band’s ability to proceed in an undiminished state.

Rick Nielsen’s son Daxx has been CT’s drummer since 2010, when OG kinsman Bun E. Carlos opted out of roadwork, and his steady virtuosity is an essential factor in the band’s patented blend of muscle and musicality.

All of this was in full evidence as the faithful filled the Events Center, rose to their feet as the lights went down and the taped intro (“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, please welcome to the stage, the best effin’ rock band you’ve ever seen, Cheap Trick”), and stayed that way throughout the majority of the set.

And what a set it was, the complete lack of All Washed Up material notwithstanding.

There’s was plenty of what you’d expect from a CT set, but there were also some deeper cuts, of the sort that folks who’ve been with the band a long time truly appreciate.

“Just Got Back,” from the often overlooked, George Martin-produced barn-burner All Shook Up, offered an early smack in the face. The pure, raucous punk rock of “He’s A Whore” and the frankly still frightening “Ballad of T.V. Violence” reminded us of the undiminished majesty of the band’s self-titled 1977 album, one of the greatest debut albums in rock history. A gorgeously eerie “Heaven Tonight” shimmered in all its Beatle-esque brilliance. Robin Taylor handled the lead vocal on another Beatle-ish beauty, “Downed”. And first encore “Never Had A Lot To Lose” underscored the fact that 80s Cheap Trick is still essential Cheap Trick.

Shows like this one prove that Cheap Trick’s intro declaration is on the money.

Ladies and gentlemen, the best effin’ rock band you’ve ever seen…
